Life Without An Address: Benefits of Living a Nomadic Lifestyle
Most of us regular folk follow a daily routine — wake up, work, go home, sleep. We face the daily humdrum of living on autopilot, riding the bus and seeing the same faces, completing repetitive tasks at work with office gossip as the only ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak work environment, and going home with a bag of TV dinner in hand and the weight of the day’s aches on your shoulders. Doesn’t sound too nice, does it?
We can’t deny that at one point, we’ve harbored fantasies of escaping the monotony of our day-to-day routine. Some of us satiate this desire by going on a short vacation while the brave few actually quit their jobs, sell off their possessions, and live the life of a nomad. Of course, the latter is a rather risky move but it’s not impossible. If you’ve been thinking of living a nomadic lifestyle, here are a few benefits that might convince you to take the plunge:
A Sense of Freedom
On a daily basis, our actions are constrained and limited because of the responsibilities that we each carry on our backs. We often find ourselves chained to our to-do list and fail to pursue our passions and desires. As a nomad, you’d be able to redefine yourself as a person without being suffocated with dreary tasks and the expectations of society and the people around you. You can try something new without feeling judged or discouraged by friends or family. Being a nomad means freeing yourself from the shackles of monotony and the pressures of society. It will be a liberating experience!
One of the many known stressors in our lives is clutter — paperwork and random office supplies strewn on your work desk, your dirty clothes piled high on your bed, books and CDs in total disarray on your shelf. It’s not a pleasant sight, and facing this kind of scene every day will only frustrate and stress you out. Yes, it’s absolutely normal to accumulate so many possessions throughout the years, and you can easily organize, sell, or give them away. But know that you’ll be enjoying a clutter-free life if you do decide to follow a nomadic lifestyle. You’ll only have the bare essentials in your backpack, and you’ll have to be resourceful with what you have. You won’t have to face clutter at all!
Knowledge and Open-Mindedness
Our knowledge is most often limited to what we hear and see on a daily basis. We also carry a few lessons we briefly learned in school or read from books. The ideas that we believe in are often shaped by the kind of society we are exposed to, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re neither progressive nor open-minded — the problem is that there’s little room to grow. By choosing a nomadic lifestyle, you’ll be exposed to new cultures that are both similar and different from yours, meet people with different ideologies and backgrounds, sample unique cuisines and flavors, and learn a country’s history and language. Being a nomad allows you to broaden your horizons and change your perspective, giving you a bigger picture of the world as opposed to the little slice of life that you had in your hometown.
Cheap and Unique Way of Living
So, you’re used to getting your morning coffee at the Starbucks nearby or you’re well-acquainted with your city’s transportation system. Every month, you have to shell out a particular amount for your house’s mortgage or rent and utility bills. And you’re left with a couple of bucks to treat yourself with something nice. A nomadic lifestyle means you’ll have to let go of daily luxuries because you’ll have a variety of other unique things to try out. Instead of going to a highly commercialized coffeehouse chain, you might want to try out the brewed coffee at the local coffee shop. Instead of taking the taxi, you’d be more compelled to try out a different way to get from point A to point B — maybe in a tuk-tuk or a motorcycle. Plus, you won’t have to worry about your mortgage or utility bills which means you’ll be saving a lot of cash. You won’t have to worry about going to work every morning because you can easily look for a job online to fund your daily expenses.
While it may sound idealistic to just drop everything and live life without a permanent address, there are several other factors to consider: are you physically and mentally able to be on your own? Do you have enough savings? Are you absolutely certain you’re ready to leave your current life behind? Ask yourself these questions before choosing to live a nomadic lifestyle. If it’s something you’ve been dying to do and you’re ready, go for it!
