This Is What You Should Plant In Your Veggie Garden If You’re After High Yields
Gardening is a very relaxing, therapeutic, and rewarding activity. This is a hobby that will provide you with much satisfaction. If you love the vegetable garden, plenty of nutritious produce will be on your plate. Here we take a look at the most prolific vegetable plants to plant in your garden. These plants will let you enjoy high yields. It thus gives lots of fresh veggies for your family, and probably enough for friends and neighbors as well!
Tomatoes
There are few things more satisfying than a merry bunch of ripening tomatoes, hanging heavy on the stalk of a healthy tomato plant. The sunkissed tomatoes are delicious right off the stalk, warmed from the heat of the sun. You can easily set up a rewarding tomato garden that produces more tomatoes than you can even eat!
The cherry and grape tomato varieties yield the highest quantity by weight. There also medium-sized tomatoes that surprise – think of lemon, ace, champion, and early girl varieties if you are looking for plenty to harvest. Every season, you can expect about 10 to 15 pounds of fruit per plant!
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are well known for being able to produce high yields of fruit per plant. These abundant climbers are great if you love pickles, as you will have enough to jar up for everyone you want to share wit. There are also bush varieties, which produce less but are still plentiful. These are a great vegetable to grow since you can make use of vertical space in the garden by using a trellis or a structure. Planting a midsummer crop as well as an early spring crop will ensure you have a steady supply all through autumn! For the best flavor, pick them young.
Sweet Potatoes and Potatoes
Under the right conditions, sweet potatoes and potatoes can row into very high yielding crops. Make sure to plant any kind of potatoes after the frosts have passed. Plant in 10-foot rows and place either the seeds or the seedlings about 12 to 18 inches apart. This way, you will get about 30 pounds of potatoes per planting season.
Potatoes like their soil loose and fluffy so that the roots of the plant can reach easily through the light soil. It is important to keep the soil moist but not soggy. You could grow potatoes in tires, between pallets or in an old trash can, for example!
Squash and Zucchini
Summer just wouldn’t be the same without the bright and colorful summer squashes! Green zucchini is also a star of the summer months, for stir-fries, salads, roasts, and even baking. The squash and zucchini plants require very little care. They are self-sufficient if they have ample water and space. You could plant these on vertical support structures as you would cucumbers, as well. You can also plant zucchini about three or four times in the growing season to make up for declining plant yield. The additional benefit is that these plants attract plenty of pollinators to your garden!
Blackberries
While they are costly at the supermarket, you could very easily grow a blackberry bush in your garden. It lets you enjoy the sweet, delicious, and juicy yields of this healthy fruit as fresh as possible!
These plants don’t take up too much room but are very rewarding if you have a bright and sunny spot in your yard for them.
Radishes
Give your salads some pep with a healthy crop of the easiest vegetable to grow – radish! Radishes grow very fast and with minimal effort on your part. The good thing is, you could eat the root as well as the greens of this lovely quick-growing vegetable! Radishes may be grown several times during a season, and so you could have a steady supply of them by staggering your planting by two or three weeks. However, these veggies don’t like the heat, so once the weather warms considerably, it’s time to stop planting radishes until the next season.
Spending time in the lovely outdoors is good for the mind and the body, and what better way to enjoy vegetables than to enjoy vegetables that you have grown with your own hands! Gardening is a fun activity for kids as well and can help relieve stress. Take advantage of whatever space you have and get creative by using containers if you are short on the ground room. It is well worth it!
