The Richest Olympians Ever – See Who Participated In Tokyo Games 2020
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was held amidst much uncertainty, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Though it was slated to be held in 2020, the rise in coronavirus cases in Japan led to its postponement to July 23rd, 2021. The closing ceremony was held on August 8th. Though the participating athletes had a lot to boast of, the empty stands in the National Stadium took the glamor away from the greatest show on earth. However, neither the lack of spectators nor the COVID-19 crisis could stop the highest-paid athletes from piling up a massive amount in their bank accounts. Here, the focus would be on the richest Olympians ever who took part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Have a look.
Kevin Durant – $75 million
The Brooklyn Nets’ forward player, Kevin Durant, rakes in a salary of $42 million. Huge, isn’t it? But that’s not all for him. His investments have reaped massive dividends for him. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and National Basketball Association champion has accentuated his fortune, thanks to Thirty-Five Ventures, the capital venture firm that owns a stake in Philadelphia Union, and Boardroom – his media network. The Tokyo Olympics is the second time that Kevin has led Team USA, in the absence of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. The total earnings that the basketball star has garnered are approximately $75 million, placing him at the No.1 spot in the rankings.
Naomi Osaka – $60 million
The 23-year-old from Japan is hailed as her country’s golden girl and that itself proves how much of a valuable player she is. Naomi Osaka is placed in the second spot, thanks to her total fortune of $60 million. She also happens to be the richest female athlete to have competed at the 2020 Olympics. She has crossed Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, both in terms of earnings and records. Naomi has raked in a staggering $55 million from her endorsements only. She has signed contracts with brands such as Levi’s, Workday, Luis Vuitton, as well as Google. The current World No.2 has been a champion at four Grand Slam tournaments already and is the reigning champion at the Australian Open, and the U.S. Open.
Damian Lillard – $40.5 million
The 31-year-old Portland Trail Blazers’ point guard’s net worth of $40.5 million makes him the third richest Olympian on this list. The basketball star has been endorsing brands such as Gatorade, 2K Sports, and Hulu, which has helped him pile up a massive sum within a period of one year. He has agreed to a new contract with Adidas which is worth an elephantine $100 million. Aside from these, he has also starred in Space Jam: A New Legacy. Damian is surely at the top of his game and has represented the United States at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Novak Djokovic – $34.5 million
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer are the big three in men’s tennis. However, the Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic, is the only one among the three to have made his way to the fourth position in the list of the richest Olympians at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 34-year-old World No. 1 has raked in an impressive $30 million so far from his endorsement deals with renowned brands like Head – the tennis equipment manufacturer from Austria, Lacoste, NetJets, and Peugeot. He has taken his net fortune to $34.5 million and that is tremendous work.
Rory McIlroy – $32 million
There has been a lot of hype built around the golf star, but Rory hasn’t been able to live up to it that much. However, that has got nothing to do with all the money he has made to date. Rory represented Northern Ireland at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. With a net worth of $32 million, he is the fifth richest Olympian to have participated at the mega show this time. His contracts with UnitedHealth Group, Omega, and Nike have helped him garner around $29 million over the past year. If that’s not enough, Rory has pocketed a cool $15 million for emerging as the champion at the FedEx Cup in the year 2019. The 32-year-old is indeed going places.
These were the five richest Olympians to have taken part in the latest edition of the Olympics. There are also the likes of Devin Booker, Kei Nishikori, Khris Middleton, and Jrue Holiday who have made quite a lot from prize money and endorsements.
