Money Saving Hacks to Help You Reach Your Financial Goals
There are many reasons why one may want to save money. Perhaps you’re saving towards education, a holiday, your retirement, or maybe you’re trying to be smarter with your money because you work so hard for it. Whatever your reasons may be, you are not alone. Millions of people struggle with keeping to their financial goals and actually achieving them. Don’t be one of those people! Use any of our tips to help you save more money, starting from today!
Switch to Cash
When you’re swiping your debit card, or worse, your credit card, you tend not to think about how much you are really spending. For this reason, it can help you spend less money simply by paying in cash only because when you’re counting out your notes and handing it over to the cashier, you get a far better feel for just how much you’re spending than if you swiped and signed. Furthermore, the obvious benefit is also that you will only be able to spend what you have – no more running into your overdraft or using credit for your purchases!
Cut Utility Usage
If you thought there was nothing you could do to lower your utility bill, think again! There are many hacks and tools available for the general homeowner to take advantage of in their effort to use less water or electricity. Think of installing solar-powered lighting for outdoor lights, replacing all incandescent and fluorescent bulbs with LED, or even installing a solar panel to heat up your geyser. Low-flow faucet fittings and showerheads can go a long way in reducing your water usage, as will collecting the rainwater into a drum from which to water the garden with, or using your grey water in the yard. Drop your thermostat during the winter and lift it a little in summer. Seal the cracks in the window seals and invest in some simple door shields to close off the airflow through the bottom of the doors in your home.
Advanced Meal Preparation
Wasted food is wasted money, and there’s no point in cooking fresh food every day and letting leftovers go to waste in the fridge, only to land up in the bin! Keep your meal prep easier and your wallet fuller by cooking large batches of foods that can be used in a variety of ways to carry you through a week or so of meals without getting bored or having to order takeaways. Besides, your waistline will thank you for it, too! Think of a large batch of bolognese which you could use in pasta bakes, spaghetti, lasagne, and even wraps. Roasted chicken or pulled pork can be prepared in large batches to make sandwiches, tacos, wraps, bakes, bagels, or pizzas. Use your imagination! Plus, you’ll be saving since you can buy bulk when ingredients are on special, and you will use less electricity to cook once off rather than multiple times throughout the week. Score!
Send Someone Else to Do Your Shopping
Many of us have a problem sticking to a shopping list – and there are also some of us who don’t shop with a list at all. The only way to properly stick to a budget is to have a shopping list that you don’t stray from. If you know you struggle to keep to your list, it’s a good idea to send someone else to do your shopping for you instead. That way, you don’t wind up with a whole lot of unnecessary stuff because you got carried away with the items on display.
There really is no excuse not to be able to handle most repairs and maintenance at home on your own, as there are many DIY kits sold at hardware stores for almost everything that needs to be done in the home. Plus, there are thousands, even millions of videos on YouTube and the internet and websites like Pinterest where you can learn a lot of ways to do easy stuff to fix things in the home or even to decorate, and all using affordable items and tools. Just pick what you will be doing for the month and make sure you do that before moving on to the next!
There you have it – easy ways to save a lot of money and reach your financial freedom or financial goals a whole lot faster. Living within your means does not have to be difficult – it’s all about being smart and limiting wastefulness (hopefully to zero!). Happy saving!
