4 Tips to Beat Your Sugar Cravings

Addiction not only pertains to those people engaging in wrongdoings such as alcohol, drugs, or smoking. Addiction happens when a person got obsessed with a certain thing, beyond the norm. And one of the most underrated addiction is our food addiction. Because food is such a sweet temptation, we tend to ignore the dangers it can bring to our body until it’s too late. And one of this severe food addiction we’re experiencing is our intense love for our sweet tooth: our sugar addiction.
There’s no doubt that sugar has been the culprit behind our weight gain and obesity risks. Furthermore, sugar distorts our hormones that can lead to cravings and, eventually, lead us to the disturbing disease of diabetes.
How can we control ourselves from having an intense craving? Here are our 5 tips on how to beat your sugar craving.
1. Eat Nuts and Fruits
The best way to ease sugar cravings is to cure it the natural way. And the natural way of getting “good” sugars in your body is through fruits. Fruits contain natural sugar that can help you ease your sugar cravings. But what’s good about fruits is that it cannot spike up your blood sugars quickly. Why? It’s because it’s also packed with fiber. The fiber digested in your body will slow the process of injecting sugar into your bloodstream.
Aside from that, the fibers in fruits can also help you feel fuller for a longer period of time. Preventing you from having any more craving episodes. If you’re not up for fruits, you can also eat some nuts. They are healthy fats rich with omega-3 that is good for your heart and they contain magnesium that can help stabilize your blood sugar level.
2. Don’t Skip Your Meals
One of the main reasons why skipping a meal is not recommended is because you need to maintain a steady blood sugar level. Because the moment your blood sugar level drop down, your body will cease functioning. This can lead to irritable mood swings, changes in your hormones, hunger, and most of all, cravings.
Did you remember the times where you can eat almost anything (even the foods you normally hate) just because you’re hungry? Yeah, there’s that. Your body will suffer hunger if you deprived it of food. And when you’re deprived, intense sugar craving is triggered. At this point, you will not care about what you eat just as long as it can satisfy the hunger inside you.
So, instead of skipping meals, develop the habit of healthy eating by having 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. If you’re still hungry, we recommend you eat veggies as they are rich in fiber, minerals, and nutrients that can help ease your cravings and make you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
3. Spice up your meals with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.
Not only these spices contain natural sweeteners to make your food extra delicious, but they can also help regulate your blood sugar levels and reduce your cravings. Practice the habit of including them in your morning beverages, or in cooking your meals like soup, pasta, and viands.
4. Consume fermented foods and beverages.
We all know that a healthy body begins with a healthy gut. And what better way to ensure you’re having a healthy gut than to eat fermented foods? Fermented foods are packed with good bacteria that helps boost your immune system while keeping the bad bacteria from invading your body.
Not only that, but fermented foods also helps stabilize your blood sugar levels. Fermented foods are one of the healthiest foods that can help restore your digestive health for easier digestion of nutrients before they can be transported throughout your body.
5. Drink A glass of Water before Indulging In Your Craving
Most of us often misunderstood thirst with hunger. We may not realize it but most of the time we hear our stomach growling, it’s not because we’re hungry. But rather, we suffer dehydration. So before you decide to delve into eating foods, why not try to drink a glass of water first? A glass of water can help ease the thirst and “hunger” you’re suffering.
After 30 minutes, try to assess yourself. Do you still feel hungry? If yes, then go ahead and eat some food. If not, hurray! You just escape from binge-eating and actually save your body by drinking more water! We also recommend to everyone to always keep yourself hydrated.
