How These Four Small Lifestyle Changes Will Affect Your Health Big-time
Let’s face it — making lifestyle changes suck, much more so when we have become accustomed and comfortable with our current daily habits and routines. But let’s not forget that (or be ashamed to admit) that some of these are probably causing problems in our general health in more ways than one. And if we keep at it, we’re most likely to regret it as we grow older!
In an effort to live a much healthier life, here are five ubiquitous lifestyle changes — ones that you have probably ignored all your life — and how they can positively affect your health in big ways. In fact, these tips are so basic that you’ve probably tried them out at one point in your life. But if you need any reminding of their benefits, keep reading then!
Include Fat In Your Diet
You probably have a look of disgust on your face while thinking, “Fat in my diet? No way!” But hear us out first. We have all blindly accepted the pre-conceived notion that any fatty food is bad for our health. But that’s not exactly true because there are good fats out there that our body needs in order to stay healthy and function properly! We don’t mean that you should start gorging yourself on deep-fried food. What you should include in your diet are good, healthy fats found in fish like salmon, avocado, olive oil, and a variety of nuts (that is, if you’re not allergic to them). If you didn’t know, incorporating these good fats into your diet will be beneficial for your immune system and your skin (say hello to radiant, glowing skin!). Leave the fear of fat behind and embrace it instead.
Make Sure To Get At Least Seven Hours of Sleep
Now, this one is a bit challenging. Sometimes, an engrossing film or a night out with friends will prevent you from getting the necessary Z’s that your body needs. That’s okay (we all need to have a bit of fun at the end of the day), but don’t make it a habit. The effects of sleep deprivation on our health can lead to serious consequences — one of which is a 23% increased risk of obesity. Stay away from your phone once you lie down in bed. If you’re someone who has trouble sleeping, there are ways in which you can try to induce sleep. Make use of calming essential oils like lavender or eat food that promotes restful sleep like asparagus, bananas, and apricots. You can even opt to tweak your bedroom lighting a bit. Whichever works for you, just keep in mind that the goal is seven hours!
We cannot overstate this fact enough! Our body is made of 60% water, so naturally, water helps maintain a healthy balance of bodily fluids and functions such as the creation of saliva, digestion, and circulation, among others. If you’re dehydrated, it will reflect on your skin as you will become more vulnerable to skin diseases — plus, you’ll be more prone to wrinkling! Ideally, you should drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. If you drink enough water a day, you’ll definitely see and feel the difference!
Be More Active
There are days when the mere act of doing a chore (or going to the kitchen to get a glass of water) feels tedious and tiresome. Some of us retreat to a sedentary lifestyle — playing video games or watching television all day long, sitting hunched in front of a computer at work, or even reading in one position for hours on end. Granted, some of these activities are our source of stress relief, but you should remember to get up once in a while to stretch or even go for a walk. If your office is located on the third floor of a building, opt to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Even better is if you can dedicate at least thirty minutes of exercise a day. Don’t fully settle into an inactive lifestyle!
You’re probably sick of hearing these tips — they’re all over the internet! But sometimes, we need a little nudge in the right direction because life can get a little messy, and before we know it, we’re back to our old, unhealthy habits. These changes are small — you might even overlook or take these aspects of your life for granted. But there’s no harm in giving them a try. You’ll thank us later!
